Press Release december 2011

The cooperation between Naviair and LFV related to a the Danish/Swedish Functional Airspace Block and establishment of the joint subsidiary NUAC has been selected as one of the ten most successful transport projects in Europe.

The Executive Agency for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T EA), has selected the 10 most successful projects among more than 400 transport projects receiving financial support from the EU.

Among the 10 projects, the EU emphasise the cooperation between Naviair and LFV related to air traffic control in Danish/Swedish airspace as one of the 10 best projects being terminated with a tangible result. In 2009 the project resulted in the Naviair/LFV joint subsidiary NUAC (Nordic Unified Air Traffic Control), responsible for handling the en route traffic in the joint Danish/Swedish airspace.

The EU pointed out the cooperation in the Agency’s recently launched campaign to underline the importance of necessary investment in developing the European transportation system.

The project is based on a Naviair/LFV ambition to reduce the costs for air traffic control in the Danish/Swedish airspace directly through a long term reduction of the prices as well as a shorter flight time, fuel savings and significant reduction of CO2 and NOx emission for airlines.

- The distinction from the EU confirms once again that our ideas of a closer cooperation among the air navigation service providers are correct. The objective is to create better and less expensive air navigation service with the highest possible safety level. I am of course pleased that our project – which already has been realised – is set as one of the examples among hundreds of essential transport projects in Europe, says Mr. Morten Dambæk, CEO of Naviair and Chairman of the Board in NUAC.

Naviair and LFV are among the companies in Europe, which are on the forefront of implementing the goals in the EU Single European Sky programme (SES) and thus the objective of harmonisation and streamlining of air traffic control in the European airspace. The Functional Airspace Blocks (FAB) and an integrated provision of air traffic control is an important part in the work creating a higher flight safety in the European airspace, less expenses for the airline companies as well as less strain on the environment.

The EU outlines the reason for selecting the Danish/Swedish project as one of the best to be:

• The preliminary work and the joint Danish/Swedish Functional Airspace Block – (FAB) in 2009 which complies with EU SES programme and were among the first in Europe
• The establishment of a joint subsidiary NUAC (Nordic Unified Air Traffic Control) in 2009, which in 2012 on behalf of the parent companies takes over the en route service provided from the 3 Air traffic control centres in Stockholm, Malmo and Copenhagen.
