Naviair in international cooperation

Naviair to be part of an agreement about the world’s first space-based global air traffic surveillance system.

Naviair has entered into an agreement, which will found the world’s first space-based global air traffic surveillance system in the next few years. aireon_ndk.jpg

The collaboration is coordinated through Virginia US based Aireon LLC. The other partners are the American telecommunications corporation Iridium Communications Inc. as well as the Air Navigation Service Providers NavCanada (Canada), IAA (Ireland), ENAV (Italy) and Naviair (Denmark).

The new system is based on 66 functional satellites as well as a number of spare satellites, launched by Iridium during the period 2015 – 2017. When fully functional, the system may provide 100 per cent global surveillance of air traffic. Today, radar-based surveillance of air traffic covers only some 10 per cent of the earth. The remaining – often remote – areas are without surveillance coverage.

The improved surveillance is a major step forward for air traffic control. The new system enables the air navigation service providers to deploy airspace above remote regions much further than is possible today.

For one thing, the aircraft may to a greater extent be allocated the optimal flight level relative to type of aircraft and motor fuel-consumption. Furthermore, the system offers the option of increasing the capacity on the aviation “highways” in order to further deploy the jet streams than is possible today. For the air traffic across the North Atlantic alone, the new system is anticipated to entail total annual fuel savings of approximately 125 million USD with significant environmental advantages through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Up until 2017, Naviair will progressively acquire a total of 6 per cent of the partnership, equalling a total contribution of approximately 160 million DKK. From 2018 the partnership behind Aireon will comprise NavCanada (51 per cent), Iridium Communications Inc. (24.5 per cent), ENAV (12.5 per cent), IAA (6 per cent) and Naviair (6 per cent).
