LARS BARFOED'S PRESS RELEASE:

Shorter travel time and climate benefits through new Danish-Swedish agreement

Today the Danish Minister for Transport, Mr. Lars Barfoed and the Swedish Minister for Communications, Mrs. Åsa Torstensson signed a government agreement establishing joint Danish-Swedish Functional Airspace Block – FAB.

The agreement results in more efficient air traffic control, flight routes are shortened and the passengers will experience shorter travel time because flying zigzag, due to borders, will be avoided in the future. For the airlines it implies less use of fuel reducing the CO2 emission.

The Danish Minister for Transport, Mr. Lars Barfoed, says:

- The aviation community, the society and the climate will benefit from this new co-operation. The benefits for the climate in particular, in the form of a reduction of the CO2 emission from the air traffic, are of great interest at the moment in the light of COP15.

- The new co-operation signifies the air traffic control be made more efficient with improved service at lower costs. Our airspace has no capacity problems, however, we need a continuously efficient air traffic control and cost reductions. Consequently, we establish performance targets for regularity, costs, safety and environment for the Danish-Swedish airspace.

With this agreement Denmark and Sweden meet the European Union requirements for establishing a Functional Airspace Block – FAB - by the end of 2012. With the joint airspace, Denmark and Sweden are in the first row among the European countries, concerning air traffic management in Europe.
