These days, Naviair’s counterpart in South Africa, the Air Traffic & Navigation Services South Africa (ATNS) faces an acute stage of air traffic controller shortage.
At the same time, due to the aviation crisis and subsequent downturn in flights in European airspace, Naviair is temporarily faced with air traffic controller surplus.
That is why the two service providers have agreed to co-operate on secondment of Danish air traffic controllers to South Africa.
The lack of air traffic controllers in South Africa is partly due to the implementation of a new air traffic management system that calls for extra resources in the transition period. At present, Naviair has a minor surplus of air traffic controllers, and from 2006, Naviair will start using own newly acquired Air Traffic Management System of the same type as what is being implemented in South Africa.
“It is a good deal for Naviair” say Mr Kurt Andreasen, Manager PR and Commercial Services, who has been responsible for the agreement with ATNS.
“This means that Naviair’s air traffic controllers will learn much about implementing new systems.” Such knowledge will be advantageous to Naviair when Naviair will begin operations of the new Air Traffic Management System.
The agreement entered into with ATNS, South Africa implies that a number of air traffic controllers now has left Denmark heading for South Africa, and will be working for ATNS for a period of 17 months.
