JOINT NEWS RELEASE published by NAVIAIR and NAV CANADA:

(Copenhagen/Ottawa, January 27, 2006) – Naviair -The Danish Air Navigation Service Provider is pleased to announce an agreement with NAV CANADA to install in Copenhagen tower advanced Canadian technology designed to keep track of critical flight data in air traffic control towers and other air traffic facilities.

The technology known as the Integrated Information Display System/Extended Computer Display System (IIDS/EXCDS) - developed by NAV CANADA – automates the coordination of flight data movement between various positions in towers, airports and terminals. The Naviair system will be called the Naviair Integrated Tower Operation System or NITOS.

Morten Dambæk, Director General of Naviair, said: “Naviair selected NAV CANADA to supply this system on the basis of its excellent functionality, competitive value and compliance with the project specifications. We have been impressed by the commitment and experience of the NAV CANADA team, and look forward to commissioning NITOS.”

John Crichton, NAV CANADA's President and CEO, said: “We are pleased that Naviair has expressed their confidence and trust in NAV CANADA to implement and modify this proven flight data coordination system. The IIDS/EXCDS system being installed in the Copenhagen Airport Tower is already a proven solution in Canada and internationally, improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”

IIDS/EXCDS allows tower controllers to manage electronic flight data online using touch-sensitive display screens. This significantly reduces the need for voice communications among controllers and replaces the traditional method of using paper strips to keep track of air traffic.
It increases efficiency by ensuring an instantaneous sharing of relevant flight information between workstations within the tower, and between the tower, airport and terminal control, permitting more efficient management and use of airspace and airport capacity.

EXCDS has been operational in Canada since 1998, and is now used in 18 NAV CANADA facilities, including all seven area control centres and 11 towers, and at some Canadian airport authorities for apron control and de-icing services. The system is flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of individual air traffic control operations.

Internationally, EXCDS is operational at Stansted and Gatwick airports in the UK, and is scheduled for installation at Heathrow airport.

Copenhagen Airport is Scandinavia’s largest, with close to 20 million passengers in 2005, and about 285,000 aircraft movements. The present air traffic control tower at Copenhagen Airport was set into operation in 1971 and stands at 36 meters high. The new tower is 70 meters high and topped by a cab two storeys high. The tower is planned to go into operation in December 2007.

NAV CANADA, the country’s provider of civil air navigation services, is a non-share capital corporation with operations coast to coast providing air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation.

Naviair, a state enterprise under the Danish Ministry of Transport and Energy, is responsible for provision of air navigation services in Denmark. Included are area control service in Copenhagen FIR as well as approach and tower control services at the Copenhagen airports of Kastrup and Roskilde and the airports of Billund, Aalborg, Aarhus, Bornholm and Esbjerg. Flight Information Service is provided in Copenhagen FIR to VFR flights and helicopter flights in airspace of the North Sea.
