To many people Wednesday 21 May was a very special day, especially all the people of Manchester, as it was the day where the British giants Manchester United for the second time won the UEFA Champions League, when they defeated English compatriots Chelsea FC.
Normally this would not create a news story here on naviair.dk, but as the UEFA Champions League final was played at the "Luzhniki Stadium" in Moscow, and as it is estimated that 40.000 of the 69.000 spectator was from England – this meant quite a few extra transit flights though Danish airspace.
Talking about the many the many extra flights, Miriam le Fevre, Operations Manager Copenhagen ACC, said:
- We had approximately 300 extra flights though Danish airspace on 21 and 22 May. We had air traffic controllers volunteering to take extra shifts – either during the night or at daytime, and everyone performed extraordinary well during the two days.
It is estimated that the extra effort from Naviair to handle the 300 flights to and from Moscow has saved the airlines from having approximately 30.000 minutes of delay.
